Steel Pipe Manufactured From Killed Carbon Steel

Killed steel is a kind of deoxidized steel.

Deoxidized steel is steel that has some or all of the oxygen removed from the melt during the steel making process. Liquid steels contain dissolved oxygen after their conversion from molten iron, but the solubility of oxygen in steel decreases with cooling. As steel cools, excess oxygen can cause blowholes or precipitate FeO.This results in cleaner, better quality steel which has fewer gas pockets and inclusions.Deoxidized steel, can be divided into four types: killed steel, semi-killed steel, rimmed steel, and capped steel.

Commonly killed steels include alloy steels, stainless steels, heat resisting steels.steels with a carbon content greater than 0.25%, steels used for forgings, structural steels with a carbon content between 0.15 and 0.25%, and some special steels in the lower carbon ranges. It is also used for any steel castings.

Killed steel have a uniform chemical composition and properties than semi-killed steel and  rimmed steel. For a given carbon and manganese content, killed steels are usually harder than rimmed steels. The disadvantage of killed steels is they often display deep pipe shrinkage.

ASTM A106,standard specification for carbon steel pipe for high temperature service, manufactured from killed steel.ASTM A106 Grade B permits higher carbon and manganese contents than ASTM A106 Grade A.ASTM A333,specification covers wall seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipe intended for use at low temperatures, was called killed carbon steel.
