Black pipes for gas transportation
Black pipe, looks black from appearance. The dark color comes from the iron-oxide formed on its surface during manufacturing. Black steel pipe refers to ordinary iron pipe and are mainly used for gas lines, it is also used to connect appliances to their supply lines. It is the pipe that is used by businesses and residential homes to convey their supply of natural or propane gas.
Black steel pipe is also used for fire sprinkler systems because of its strong resistance to heat. It is usually joined by welding or by using mechanical couplings. It can even be used instead of galvanized pipe in projects other than carrying water for drinking.
Black iron pipe is actually made of a low-grade "mild steel" compound. This gives it much better corrosion resistance than traditional cast iron piping. There are few standards that all black iron pipes adhere to. However, they are all made to handle natural and propane gas, which usually stay below 60psi. The standards that black iron pipe must conform to guarantee a pressure rating of at least 150psi, if installed properly.
Where to buy black pipe?
Black steel pipes and tubing are easy to fabricate, readily available, and cost less than most other metals. In well protected environments, the life expectancy of black steel pipe is 50 to 100 years.
We can supply many grades of black pipe or mild carbon steel pipe, including ASTM A106 B, A53 and so on. As a leading pipe distributor, we are not only able to supply new black pipe direct from stock or mill sources, but we can also cut pipe to your required length and add special coatings as needed. What’s the difference between Black pipe and Galvanized Pipe?
1. Different coating.
Black pipe is made of steel as is galvanized pipe. The difference is that galvanized pipe is coated with zinc, while black pipe is not.
2. Different Corrosion resistance
The black pipe is a light coating and provides only the barest protection. Black pipe will rust outdoors. The galvanized pipe will barely rust at all.
3. Different costs.
Black pipe is cheaper than galvanized pipe because of the zinc that is added to galvanized pipe.
4. Different application
Black pipe is best used for gas lines, not for water lines because it rusts easily, while galvanized cannot be used for gas lines because the zinc can clog the lines when it begins to flake, galvanized pipe is the safer pipe to use in water lines.
