Both Galvanized Steel and Stainless Steel are steel used in corrosive environment. They are completely distinct materials with a variety of applications.Knowing the difference is crucial, especially if considering the option of what material to use for a home improvement or construction project. What’s the difference between Galvanized Steel and Stainless Steel?
The principle of corrosion resistant
Galvanized steel is steel which has a coating of Zinc on the surface of metal. The Zinc coating builds up an oxide layer to prevents further corrosion. Stainless steel has a certain amount of Nickel and or Chromium added the steel alloy. The addition of the Nickel and Chromium causes a layer of Nickel or Chromium oxide to form on the surface, which prevents the steel from rusting.
Galvanized steel is a layer of zinc coating on the surface of carbon steel mainly while stainless steel is an alloy of iron with ten percent or more of chromium and other elements.
Galvanized steels can only last for some time until the Zinc is consumed whereas Stainless steel will last longer in the same corrosive environment.
Stainless steel is more expensive than Galvanized Steel.
Both of them are generally used in corrosive environment. However, they are different in strength and corrosion resistance.Galvanized steel is used in in water or humid condition such as metal roofs for houses, and chain link fencing. Because stainless steel is more expensive and more durable, it is used for large budget projects which require lots of heavy lifting or thick components Such as skyscrapers, bridges, sculptures and monuments, cars, railways, airplanes and a number of other high-end products.
